Best Apple Cake Recipe

Ingredients:

  • For the Cake:
    • 2 cups all-purpose flour
    • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
    • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
    • 1/2 teaspoon salt
    • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
    • 1 cup granulated sugar
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 2 large eggs
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 1/2 cup sour cream or plain yogurt
    • 3 cups peeled, cored, and chopped apples (about 3 medium apples)
  • For the Topping:
    • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
    • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
    • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, cold and cubed

Instructions:

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare the Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
    • Cut in the cold butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
    • Set aside.
  3. Prepare the Cake Batter:
    • In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves.
    • In a large bowl, beat the softened butter with granulated sugar and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
    • Mix in the vanilla extract.
    • Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients in three additions, alternating with the sour cream, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
    • Fold in the chopped apples.
  4. Assemble the Cake:
    • Spread the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
    • Sprinkle the topping evenly over the batter.
  5. Bake:
    • Bake in the preheated oven for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
    • Allow the cake to cool in the pan on a wire rack before serving.
