Cabbage rolls, also known as stuffed cabbage, are a delicious and hearty dish. Here’s a simple recipe for making cabbage rolls at home:

Ingredients:

  • 1 large head of cabbage
  • 1 lb ground beef (you can also use ground pork or a combination of both)
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 egg
  • 1 can (14 oz) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14 oz) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: paprika, parsley, or other herbs and spices for seasoning

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cabbage:
    • Bring a large pot of water to a boil.
    • Carefully remove the core from the cabbage.
    • Place the whole cabbage in the boiling water for about 3-5 minutes until the leaves start to soften. Remove the cabbage from the water and let it cool. Peel off the softened leaves one by one. If the leaves are still too firm, you can put the cabbage back into the water for a little longer.
  2. Prepare the Filling:
    • In a skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and garlic, sauté until softened and fragrant.
    • Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned. Season with salt, pepper, and any other desired herbs or spices.
    • In a mixing bowl, combine the cooked rice, cooked beef mixture, and beaten egg. Mix well to combine.
  3. Assemble the Cabbage Rolls:
    • Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the filling mixture near the stem end.
    • Roll the leaf, tucking in the sides as you go, to form a tight roll.
    • Repeat with the remaining cabbage leaves and filling mixture.
  4. Cook the Cabbage Rolls:
    • In a large pot or deep skillet, spread a layer of tomato sauce and diced tomatoes on the bottom.
    • Place the cabbage rolls seam side down in the pot, packing them snugly.
    • Pour the remaining tomato sauce and diced tomatoes over the top of the cabbage rolls.
    • If desired, sprinkle some paprika or additional herbs over the top for extra flavor.
    • Cover the pot and simmer over low heat for about 45 minutes to 1 hour, or until the cabbage rolls are tender and cooked through.
  5. Serve:
    • Once the cabbage rolls are cooked, serve them hot with a side of mashed potatoes, crusty bread, or salad.

Enjoy your homemade cabbage rolls! They make a comforting and satisfying meal, perfect for sharing with family and friends.
