Ingredients

For the Bread:

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 2 cups peeled and chopped apples (about 2 medium apples)

For the Streusel Topping:

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup (1/2 stick) unsalted butter, cold and cut into small pieces

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Pan:
    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
    • Grease a 9×5-inch loaf pan or line it with parchment paper.
  2. Make the Streusel Topping:
    • In a small bowl, mix together the granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, and cinnamon.
    • Add the cold butter pieces and use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Set aside.
  3. Make the Bread Batter:
    • In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    • Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
    • In another bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg.
    • Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, alternating with the buttermilk, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients. Mix just until combined.
    • Fold in the chopped apples.
  4. Assemble and Bake:
    • Pour the batter into the prepared loaf pan and spread it evenly.
    • Sprinkle the streusel topping evenly over the batter.
    • Bake for 50-60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the bread comes out clean.
    • If the bread starts to brown too quickly, cover it loosely with aluminum foil during the last 15 minutes of baking.
  5. Cool and Serve:
    • Allow the bread to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes, then transfer it to a wire rack to cool completely before slicing.
